October 27, 2026: Christian Nationalism and Sexual Health
Presented by: Jeremiah Gibson, LMFT, CST
Over the last few years, American citizens have become familiar with Project 2025, a policy project adopted within the Republican Party designed to interrupt and reverse civil rights and develop a society in which white Christian men overtly have power. In this presentation, we'll offer a brief history of how religious leaders have fused with Republican (and sometimes Democratic) politicians to enact policies that fund abstinence-only education, restrict the rights of LGBTQ+ folks, and threaten the bodies of women and people of color.
In the second half of the course, we'll discuss how sex therapy can be an act of resistance, placing folks who actively or formerly participated in Christian Nationalist communities (such as Evangelical, Mormon, and Pentecostal churches) in a two-choice dilemma. They can choose the values of the sexual health principles. They can choose the values of the Christian Nationalist communities. But they can't choose both. (Although many try.) In fact, around 40 million Americans have stopped attending church in the last 20 years. We'll explore the sociological decisions they make, and how sex therapists can inform and guide the faith transitioning process.
