Sex Research

Presented by Carla R. Rosinski, PhD, LMHC, CST (she/her)

Providing good, ethical care requires that sex therapists stay up-to-date on the available scientific data and literature, but knowing how to effectively utilize this data and literature requires that clinicians understand how to think critically about the research we consume. In this course, participants will learn what makes research "scientific", as well as what types of methodologies are utilized by researchers who study sex and sexuality. Participants will also be invited to consider what challenges and limitations sex researchers face and how these challenges and limitations impact what topics are studied and how.

Join us via Zoom to view this training. Participants must register for class by 5pm the day before. In order to receive CEUs, you must complete the evaluation form that will be sent to you. The instructor may also ask for a reflection paper.

This program meets the requirements for the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for 3 CE credits for each course. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT Certification and renewal of certification. South Shore Sexual Health Center, LLC, Provider #15-784-S. History of the Discipline of Sex Therapy

Presented by: Jordon Anderson, LICSW, CST (they/them)

This class will explore themes relevant to sex therapy practice with trans clients using the example of three famous, or infamous, individuals. Together we will go back in time and ask eerily relevant questions touching on power, privilege, iatrogenic harm, embodiment, freedom, connection, and community. Participants will gain an understanding of how these ideas shaped, and continue to shape, how therapists understand their roles and responsibilities. This applies not only to the people in their office, but also to those who will eventually measure our own actions in the future.

Transgender & Non-Binary Erotic Embodiment

Presented by: Lucie Fielding, PhD, LPC, LMHC (she/they)

“The body,” as Susan Bordo suggests, “is a powerful symbolic form, a surface on which the central rules, hierarchies, and even metaphysical commitments of a culture are inscribed” and continually reinforced. Nowhere is this assertion more observable than in how the cultures in which we move seek to delimit and define our erotic lives and how we embody gender. Most insidiously, these dominant narratives seek to recruit us to do the work of our own erasure and teach us to to minimize, ignore, or outright fear the spark of the erotic in our embodied lives, or, as Audre Lorde put it in her essay The Uses of the Erotic, “the yes inside ourselves, our deepest cravings.” Over the course of this three-hour workshop, participants will be introduced to somatically-grounded and pleasure-centered frameworks and tools that will help them support trans, non-binary, and gender expansive clients nurturing trans erotic embodiment and in attuning to pleasure, desire, and the body’s erotic wisdom.

Skills Training - Challenging Ageism and Authoritarianism, One Sexual Pleasure at a Time

In an age of increasing authoritarianism, sexuality is on the frontlines. In this session, we will discuss theory, current research, grief, loss, and death, as well as case studies applicable to your work with older adults in sex therapy. Taught by a sex therapist, Sarah Rogers, LICSW, CST and a sexuality educator, Jane Fleishman, PhD, CSE. This fast-paced and intriguing session offers a frank perspective on the issues facing older adults’ sexuality and practical tools to assist you in your work.

Building Trans Lifelines: Communities in Action

Along with the Private Practice Colloquium (PPC), South Shore Sexual Health Center is proud to co-sponsor the New England Association for Family and Systemic Therapy (NEAFAST)’s annual Sexuality Symposium.

Whether your work is individual, relational or family centered, all clinicians need to establish a level of competency in working with gender non-conforming/trans populations and have an understanding of the unique issues facing these populations. This conference will create a space for those who work directly or indirectly with the folx of all genders to ask curious questions in a non-judgmental environment that supports clinicians at all levels of experience. We will explore together how to engage in larger political and social systems, address the politicism of this work while acknowledging our in-office limitations, and identify ways in which what is legal is not always ethical. Featuring keynote speaker Jamie Joy!

The conference will be held virtually via Zoom. Participants must attend live, as no recordings will be available for later viewing. In order to receive CE credits, you must complete the evaluation form that will be sent to you.

For participants who are enrolled in South Shore Sexual Health Center’s Sex Therapy Training Program: The cost of this conference is included in your tuition, so you can register at no additional cost. To do so, please email info@ssshealthcenter.com to receive the special registration code to enter at check out. Desire and Desire Discrepancies

Desire and Desire Discrepancies

Presented by Stephanie Wallace, LMFT, CST

Desire discrepancies are one of the most common reasons that clients report seeking out sex therapy, and even when desire issues are not the immediate presenting problem, desire discrepancies are often present and contributing to relational distress. Additionally, myths and misunderstandings about desire are abundant in media and public discourse. These factors combined make this subject an essential area of learning for any couples/sex therapist. In this course, students will learn to conceptualize desire problems as normal, developmental, relational, and dynamic, and will build skills and strategies for working with clients around desire.
